Background of the Study
Land disputes are a common issue in many parts of Nigeria, and Gaya Local Government Area (LGA) in Kano State is no exception. Conflicts over land ownership, boundaries, and usage rights often result in legal battles, social tensions, and even violence. Local governments are pivotal in managing these disputes, as they are the closest administrative units to the communities where conflicts arise. In Gaya LGA, the local government is responsible for resolving land disputes through mediation, legal frameworks, and collaborative efforts with traditional rulers and community leaders. However, the effectiveness of these mechanisms in resolving land disputes and ensuring justice remains an area of concern. This study aims to appraise the systems in place for managing land disputes in Gaya LGA, focusing on the strategies employed, challenges faced, and the outcomes of these efforts.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Land disputes in Gaya LGA often lead to protracted conflicts, and the mechanisms available for resolving these disputes may not always be effective. The local government, despite its role in land management, may face challenges such as a lack of legal infrastructure, traditional conflicts, and resource constraints in addressing these issues. This research seeks to evaluate the current systems for managing land disputes and assess how effectively the local government has been able to address land-related conflicts in Gaya.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the systems in place for managing land disputes in Gaya LGA, Kano State. It will examine the roles of local government, traditional institutions, and other stakeholders involved in land dispute resolution. Limitations may include challenges in obtaining detailed data on ongoing disputes and the subjective nature of community perceptions regarding conflict resolution processes.
